Our History

1920 – 1930

On April 12, 1920, in the city of Medellín, Colombia, a group of Antioquian visionaries founded “Compañía Nacional de Chocolates” (in English National Chocolate Company). At first, it was named Compañía de Chocolates Cruz Roja (Red-Cross Chocolate Company) after small local producers joined this venture. During the following years, we were able to consolidate our company improving production processes and renewing our factories located in Cali, Bogotá and Medellín and installing a new factory in Bucaramanga.

Since then, we have established solid foundations for our development including popular brands, technological progress, a service vocation, and a proximity to clients and consumers.

1930 – 1935

We entered the market with new products, and we generated strong marketing and distribution campaigns to tend to our different publics. We positioned brands on the market as Corona, Diana and Tesalia. In addition to this, we started roasting coffee and grinding it under a brand named Bandera in the city of Cali, Colombia.

1935 – 1940

We consolidated our company on the market by acquiring the chocolate companies named Chaves and Equitativa, Santa Fe and Tequendama. On the other hand, we have generated intense campaigns to promote chocolate consumption despite supply problems of raw materials imported from Brazil, South Africa and Costa Rica.

1940 – 1950

Pablo Emilio Echeverri joined the company as the first Colombian technician to work for the company. He performed great work renovating our industrial equipment and maintained the philosophy of developing new products to satisfy Colombian consumers’ tastes.

1950 – 1955

Hot Chocolate consolidated itself as the favorite drink of both the urban and rural working classes.

1960 – 1970

In the 60s, we started an active program to promote cocoa plantations and the diversification of chocolate production. This is how we came to offer Jet, the first chocolate snack treat made in the country, and Chocolisto, the first chocolate drink mix made for milk. These brands have grown up along with many generations from infancy to adulthood. After this, nuts, cereal and home baked goods were added to our portfolio.

The company has created several picture collections, but not like CNCH’s Natural History Picture Album which has reached the public’s greatest rating of acceptance since it was launched.

1980 – 1985

With the new direction of world economy, we started an ongoing modernization process along with an open market process in the 80s targeting foreign markets.

New products were launched on the market including Wafer Jet, Combi Jet, Triki Jet, Coco Jet and Deli Jet (these were the first Colombian snack treats made with chocolate covered centers).

1985 – 1990

Chocolyne was launched, and it was the first sugar-free diet chocolate in Colombia. Likewise, the company underwent great renovation launching Diana and Tesalia which were two types of chocolate for hot beverages flavored with cloves and cinnamon.

1990 – 1995

We signed important agreements with foreign companies that allowed our products to access international markets.

In 1995, the company was decorated with a National Medal called the Boyaca Silver Cross, in Spanish Cruz de Boyacá, on the company’s 75th anniversary.

1995 – 2000

We launched Chocolate Nacional, which was the first instant chocolate made in Colombia. Also, we launched a chocolate covered bar named Gol, Topsi chocolate candy, (Crunchy-pops) Cruji Explosivos, Golochips with vitamins and Granola and oatmeal.

2000 – 2002
